Taxes

1. Property Tax — Primary Residence

NJ resident; honorably discharged from active duty in any era (wartime or peacetime — the wartime service requirement was eliminated effective December 4, 2020 by P.L. 2019 c.413). Reservists and National Guard members qualify only if called to active federal/state duty (not routine weekend training). Must own and occupy the property as primary residence as of October 1 of the pre-tax year. No income limit.

2. Property Tax — Vehicle / Personal Property

NJ does not levy a state-level or local personal property tax on motor vehicles. No vehicle property tax exists to exempt.

3. Vehicle Sales / Use Tax

Honorably discharged disabled veteran; vehicle purchase must be fully or partially funded by a VA grant or NJ Department of Veterans Affairs grant/loan.

4. State Income Tax — Active Duty Military Pay

**Combat zone pay:** Exempt from NJ income tax.

5. State Income Tax — Military Retirement Pay

Any former service member receiving military retirement pay from any branch, including Reserve and National Guard retirements.

6. State Income Tax — SBP Annuity

**Amount:** SBP, RCSBP, and RSFPP annuities are fully exempt from NJ income tax.

7. State Income Tax — General

Honorably discharged (or released under honorable conditions) veteran. Available in the tax year of discharge and all subsequent years. Available on both resident and nonresident NJ returns.

8. Sales Tax Exemption

NJ does not issue a general veteran sales tax exemption card. The only veteran-related sales tax benefit is the proportional exemption for VA-grant-funded vehicle purchases (see #3).

9. Other State Tax Breaks

- **Combat zone pay:** Exempt from NJ income tax; non-combat-zone active-duty pay is taxable (see #4). - **VA disability compensation:** Fully exempt from NJ income tax under federal law; NJ conforms.

10. Vehicle Registration Fee

**Current status:** No statewide toll exemption is in effect for veterans as of May 2026.

14. Public Transit Discount

Veterans with any service-connected disability may present a VA digital ID card indicating "service connected" to purchase a one-way reduced-fare ticket. - **Discount:** 50% or more off regular one-way fare. - **2026 note:** NJ Transit-issued non-photo Reduced Fare ID cards (for general disability) were retired as of January 1, 2026 and replaced with a photo ID card requirement. Same program. Free saltwater and coastal fishing privileges are included in the disabled veteran certification. NJ saltwater registration (federally required) is included under the free license program.
