Taxes

1. Property Tax — Primary Residence

Iowa resident who is an honorably discharged veteran meeting ONE of: (a) 18+ months active duty (any era), (b) discharge due to service-connected injury/illness regardless of length, (c) Guard/Reserve with 20+ years creditable service, (d) Guard/Reserve with 90+ days federal active duty (non-training), (e) Korean Conflict-era 5-year reserve commitment, (f) qualifying wartime periods. Surviving spouse, minor child, or widowed parent of a qualifying veteran may also claim.

2. Property Tax — Vehicle / Personal Property

Iowa does not have a separate vehicle property/excise tax assessed annually. Vehicles are subject to an annual registration fee (see Category 10). No distinct "vehicle property tax" exemption exists separate from registration fees.

3. Vehicle Sales / Use Tax

Iowa does not provide a vehicle sales/use tax exemption for veterans or disabled veterans. The 100% SC disabled veteran sales tax exemption effective July 1, 2026 (see Category 8) **explicitly excludes** vehicle purchases.

4. State Income Tax — Active Duty Military Pay

Any Iowa resident or nonresident member of the Armed Forces (active duty, Guard, Reserve) who receives federal military pay for active duty service included in federal adjusted gross income.

5. State Income Tax — Military Retirement Pay

Any Iowa resident or nonresident receiving military retired pay included in federal gross income. No age requirement. Effective for tax years beginning January 1, 2014 (Iowa Code §§ 422.7(31A) and (31B)).

**VA disability compensation:** Federal law exempts VA disability comp from federal income tax; Iowa conforms — **state tax-free** at all ratings, all tiers.

Outdoor Recreation

19. Hunting License

**Annual Hunting License — Armed Forces Veteran ($7):** Iowa resident honorably or generally discharged veteran with 90+ active duty days, resident for 90+ days. Cost: **$7/year** after one-time application approval. Habitat fee ($15) still required for hunters under 65. Submit DD-214 + DNR Form (one-time). Covers hunting + fishing combo.

20. Fishing License — Freshwater

**Annual Veterans Fishing License ($7):** Included in the $7 annual hunting/fishing combo license (Category 19).

**$7 annual combo license** (Tier 4+, honorably discharged veteran, 90-day resident): Covers hunting and fishing in one license.

23. Trapping License

**Lifetime Fur Harvester (Trapping) License — Disabled Veteran ($5):** As described in Category 19. Enacted via SF 2471 (2026 session). Any SC rating (0%+) qualifies, as long as the disability is service-connected (38 U.S.C. Ch. 11).

24. State Parks — Day Use / Entrance

Iowa does not offer a veteran-specific free day-use state park admission program. Iowa state parks generally do not charge a separate day-use/entrance fee (parking and day use are free for all). No veteran-specific waiver is documented because no general fee exists to waive.

40. State Home Loan / Down-Payment Assistance

Service member or veteran who served 90+ days active duty during August 2, 1990 – April 6, 1991 (Gulf War) OR September 11, 2001 – present, with honorable or other-than-dishonorable discharge. Also: federally injured service persons from those periods; surviving spouses of qualifying veterans. No disability rating required.

41. Financial Assistance / Emergency Relief

Iowa veterans (and dependents) with income less than 300% of federal poverty guidelines and assets no more than $20,000. Must have wartime service (honorably discharged, 90+ days active duty non-training). Administered through County Veterans Service Offices (CVSOs).

42. State Veteran Bonus

Iowa does not currently have an active state veteran bonus or service recognition payment for deployed service. Historical programs have ended; no active wartime bonus exists.

43. Specially Adapted Housing — State Supplement

**Disabled Veteran Homestead Tax Credit continuation:** Surviving spouse receiving DIC from VA may continue the 100% Homestead Tax Credit on the qualifying homestead. Remarriage does **not** disqualify DIC recipients — this is expressly provided in Iowa Code § 425.15. If the surviving spouse changes homesteads after the veteran's death, a new application (Form 54-049) is required with current DIC documentation.
